The page turns and the eyes stop reading. Images give
way to a collection of photographs that evoke an emotional response.
It’s a quit room or cool breeze against the setting sun. Sunrise and white sands. It's a place that you want to immerse yourself into. It’s a place you want to be. An expanse of beach, a stunning ocean, mountain scene, or a quit room fancied by you: A feeling captured. It’s a photo that provokes a reaction and makes you want to be touched. Massage, an experience that make you dream, want, need.
Photography is my passion. It’s making the unfinished look finished....
The Value OF Photography In Hotel Marketing
Photographing resorts and hotels is an art, and images are the most
powerful sales tool the hospitality industry has. The problem is cost.
With the advent of Photoshop and digital photography some marketing
decision makers think that the photographic process has become so
easy that anyone with a digital camera can create a
picture for their promotions, but more knowledgeable marketing directors know the difference between a
professional photographer and an amateur with a digital camera who
proclaims himself a professional.
With new technology...
In the last year I’ve been called on to shoot signature photographs for a number of resorts.
A signature shot is used for the main identity of the resort or hotel. Some of the uses are for printed pieces, main photo on a website, billboards, ads etc. This is the one photo that has to intrigue and grab their audience to view other information in their promotional media.
I was hired to shoot a signature photograph for the Hilton Point Tapatio in Phoenix Arizona. This has got to have been the most difficult resort to get a signature shot of. First off the resort is probably 1/2 a mile...
In the 80’s, the days of film I was asked to bid on an ad layout that was crazy. The shot was for a company that finds electrical shorts in wiring. The photograph they wanted produced was showing an employee pulling an electrical cable out of a wall in an office.
An office set needed to be constructed, but the problem was how do we have an individual climbing up a wall, pulling a cable out of the wall. FYI, This is before Photoshop.
Test Photo
The bidding process started. We had to build a set that consisted of two 8-foot walls, a ceiling and a tiled floor. The walls also had to be rigged...
One of my colleagues described us a the “Photosaurus’s of the photo industry”.
Years ago I got a call from a creative director from one of the largest agencies in Phoenix with a real challenge. The creative director who called me was someone that I had had worked with in the past. As time went on I wasn’t the photographer of choice for the agency. The CD told me that they were using younger talent because they had a newer point of view {Definitely felt like a “Photosaurus”} Anyway the photograph that the Creative director wanted me to shoot was Fking impossible. That’s why he decided...
Years ago my ego was getting out of control.I heard stories of great photographers and how they would only give their clients the photograph that they wanted them to use. I thought that was the way it should be; after all, clients were hiring me for my point of view, lighting and composition.
One of the jobs I was hired to shoot, was a still life for the cover of the AJ Bayless Annual Report. The shot was to feature Bayless Honey. I hired Janet Nelson (who is one of the best photo stylists in Phoenix) to find the props and help me on the shoot. Janet collected most of the props from the Bayless...
Years ago I shot for the El Pollo Asado chain of restaurants. At the time they were with a Phoenix advertising agency and Siegel Photographic was chosen to produce their food photography.
We were shooting chicken for their advertising and promotional materials. Everything was shot on 8x10 transparency film. My client, wanted to play a joke on his partner, so I thought it would be funny if we replaced the bowl of rice with a bowl of cockroaches (don’t ask where we got the bugs :0). We then styled the rice bowl with cockroaches and photographed them in the chicken food set.
Unfortunately,...
In April of 2013 I was hired to photograph the new Twin Arrows Casino and Hotel.
There were many Challenges involved in this shoot that needed to be addressed. In my professional career I have used a technique I call “pessimistic optimism”. This thought process is pretty cool. The trick is to think of everything that can go wrong and then make sure you are prepared to handle the problems in all situations. Some people call this pessimistic, I call this being prepared.
The first part of the assignment was to shoot their exterior. This was needed for their pre opening advertising. I didn’t...
In March 2013 Dave Siegel of Siegel Photographic was hired to create photo images for the Eldorado Hotel and Spa in Santa Fe New Mexico.
Because of my experience in architecture, life styles, and food photography, I was a perfect match for the hotels photographic needs.
We booked a flight to Albuquerque New Mexico on Southwest Airlines. After much research on baggage policies I picked Southwest because they allowed excess baggage weight up to 100 pounds for photographers and media.
The hotel was about 60 miles from Albuquerque, so I rented an SUV to transport my assistant, myself and equipment...
